RideMICRO

The new, flexible service connects portion of Brunswick, Pender, and New Hanover Counties. Passengers can book an on-demand ride from a virtual stop within a RideMICRO ‘zone’ and be connected to Wave Transit’s fixed-route service or brought to their destination.

RideMICRO, is a point-to-point service available to anyone traveling within the designated service network!
This new transportation offering provides greater flexibility, decreased wait times, and increased stop locations than a traditional fixed-route bus.

RideMICRO service replaced fixed route service in Northern New Hanover County and the Carolina Beach area. The service uses real-time dynamic routing that can change on a moment’s notice, allowing riders to go anywhere in the service zone, on-demand. Rides can be booked on the app or by phone. Customers catch a ride at a “virtual stop,” and along their route, sophisticated dynamic routing algorithms use real-time, on-the-ground information to add other people traveling in the same direction into the same vehicle. RideMICRO is more responsive, efficient, and has shorter wait times than fixed route service, while still offering a low cost public transportation option for our community. Background

On Tuesday February 8th, 2022 the Wave Transit Board of Directors voted unanimously to adopt a proposal to expand the existing network, as well as investing in more frequent service. In November 2021, a recommendation was presented for consideration with adoption of a finalized draft slated for January 2022. The regularly scheduled January 27th, 2022 Board of Directors meeting was recessed to February 8th, 2022 to continue discussion on the network redesign, following the announcement from Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) on an additional $108 billion authorized for public transportation under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The new law will increase Wave Transit’s federal formula funding by approximately $700,000 each year in over the next five years. Provided this added information, the Board of Directors voted to advance a revised framework which would result in increased frequencies on 30% of the fixed routes, enlarge Wave Transit’s service footprint, and improve efficiencies

Revisions to Dial-a-Ride Transportation (DART) Service

Dial-a-ride transportation (DART), or ADA complementary Paratransit service will no longer be offered to new customers in areas which fixed-route transportation services have been replaced by microtransit. Areas include northern New Hanover County and Carolina Beach. New and existing customers will have an opportunity to utilize the on-demand, Microtransit service delivery alternative for access to these areas.
